Short redemption review
Con report.
Redemption was my first proper foray into fandom for a while. (I enjoy cult tv but don’t really do fannish things at it.) A determined couple of years getting my financial house in order meant I didn’t do all that much for a while, and Redemption was a great re-entry point; everyone seemed to be ready to get involved, and have fun.
The venue was great – well I would say that, with my free upgrade to executive bedroom. Hotel catering seemed a bit dire, but we’d done a snack run in advance, so all was groovy.
Friday was pretty relaxed. I ran the first of the ‘Make a Fanzine in a Weekend’ workshops. Not sure if I was pleased (hooray! It’ll happen!) or disappointed (boo! I have to work!) when half a dozen people turned up, but over the few days ‘Dinosaurs not Included’ was born.
The opening ceremony was fab – a role model for other conventions. Punchy, the humour not forced, and a real willingness to ‘get on with it’ and not drag things out. Applause to Chris O’Shea who was a very effective compare.
I struggled with the pub quiz, which entered new realms of geekdom for me, but everyone else seemed to enjoy it. A quick round of werewolf, and an early night for me.
Saturday was mainly zining, pulling together the first plots in ‘The Slaughter of the apocryphyls.’
Eclectic’s interactive quiz was LOADS of fun, and included games from Shooting Stars, Question of sport, and others. Very well organised, with a lot of effort put in. Winning chocolate also helped J
I tried the tentacle sex panel. The room seemed to be in 2 halves – those really interested, and those like me who had turned up to go ‘Ewww.’
I didn’t attend the cabaret but was very impressed by the costumes – especially Ranger Hilary who had handcrafted Kayleigh’s (sp?) ‘pretty’ dress from Firefly – 75 layers of frills and all.
Sunday was nice and mellow, with finishing the zine, including notes from 3 of the presentations – Sherlock Holmes and sci-fi, Wormhole physics, and the Original Orion. After an airport run, I went to the Online Pseudonyms panel, where we debated internet stalkers and how best to avoid them, then played ‘Do you Worship C’Thulu?”
Pre-bed quiet laptop time was marginally spoilt by filkers in the bar. Apparently they’d already been asked to leave the Rotunda. I would suggest next time they book a room for Sunday night for singers? Then everyone can be groovy.
The hotel gave me a bill for half what it should have been under my door this morning. Ever honest, I called down and asked them to recalculate it. They came up with 2/3rds what it should have been. I gave them two cracks of the whip, considered it fair, and will be investing the difference in DVDs.
I’ve signed up for Orbital. Given it’s run by the same crew I’m sure it’s going to be excellent. I also plan on going to Red ’09, but my still-skint brain struggles with booking something 2 years hence when the hotel money isn’t in the bank yet…
Woohoo! Back on the con circuit!
Thanks to all the organisers. It truly was fab.
